Some existing data protection products no longer meet the changing requirements of many organisations, according to one expert.
Writing for Computerworld, Jerome Wendt, president and lead analyst at DCIG, said that many of the most widely used products "go back almost two decades" when they were required to only protect a small number of servers.
However, data centres have become far more complex, with more servers and disks becoming a common back up technology, the expert noted.
Although existing products have "matured" in an effort to meet this changing landscape, they remain rooted to "yesterdays requirements for robust tape management".
"As enterprises look to consolidate their backup software, they need to carefully consider if these products, regardless of their maturity and support, are really the right products with the right underlying architectures to meet the problems of today's enterprise companies going forward," Mr Wendt stated.
DCIG assists organisations and customers in writing evaluations of products and services in the storage and electronically stored information.
