The Irish data protection commissioner has claimed that information from Bank of Ireland customers has been stolen.
Speaking to RTE News, Billy Hawkes explained that some 10,000 customers may be affected following the loss of four laptops last year.
It is thought that the computers contain information relating to medical backgrounds, account details and addresses of a number of its life assurance customers.
According to the news provider, Mr Hawkes claimed that investigating the circumstances surrounding the loss of the data is a "matter of urgency".
Although the laptops are believed to have contained security software, the data had not been encrypted by the bank.
The Irish Times reports that a spokesman for the bank said that the organisation had contacted the "appropriate authorities" in recent weeks.
Having only informed the commissioner last week, it has now undertaken a programme of encrypting data stored on some 5,000 company laptops.
