More and more employees are coming under pressure from their employers to install unlicensed software on their network, says software licensing watchdog, the Federation Against Software Theft (FAST).
John Lovelock, chief executive at FAST commented: “We are hearing all too frequently from IT workers that employers are pressurising them into installing illegal software. It’s becoming increasingly common and easy for employers to save costs and even time, by putting software compliance in the ‘too difficult’ basket in these troubled economic times.”
FAST has called for employees who are co-erced into using illegal software to blow the whistle on their employers by contacting 01628 622 121 or visiting www.fastiis.org/our_services/enforcement/reportingPiracy. FAST is promising to champion the cause for employees who are put in a difficult position and provide expert guidance on how to deal with software piracy.

The Federation Against Software Theft (FAST) and Investors in Software (IiS) have joined forces in an attempt to improve business user education on the subject of Software Asset Management (SAM).
While FAST is most-commonly perceived as a licensing enforcement body, it sees the union with IiS as an opportunity to focus more on promoting the adoption of best practices, so that organizations can achieve license compliance as part of a wider software management strategy.
“The logic of this operational merger becomes clear when you consider the fact that organizations increasingly have to demonstrate good corporate governance through compliance audits, but equally they wish to reduce software procurement and support costs and ensure that all licences owned are fit for purpose,” said John Lovelock, chief executive at FAST.

The latest CIO Index Survey of 145 IT directors across the UK has found that Software Asset Management was the biggest single area of technology adoption in 2007. More than half of respondents said they had deployed some form of SAM initiative in the last year, with a further 19 percent conducting pilot studies and 14 percent reviewing the business benefits.
One reason cited for the increased adoption is a greater focus on compliance efforts by leading software vendors, but there is also a better understanding of the positive aspects of SAM.
