Nevada firm pays $200,000 for SAM failure

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) today announced that a Nevada-based a joint civil engineering and land survey services company has settled a lawsuit for $205,000 as well as agreeing to delete all unlicensed copies of software installed on their computers, acquire any licenses necessary to become compliant, and commit to implementing stronger software license management practices.

The lawsuit was instigated by the BSA on behalf of Autodesk. The defendent has also paid unspecified legal costs and other damages.

According to the BSA’s official press release, part of the issue that led to legal action was that the end user organization was not able to supply a consistent and accurate audit of the software installed on its network - the building block of any successful Software Asset Management (SAM) or compliance initiative.
