Canadian firms fall foul of software licensing laws

Five Canadian organizations from the manufacturing, engineering and education industries have paid a combined total of $270,091 in damages to the Business Software Alliance (BSA) following allegations that they were using unlicensed software on their computers.

Under the Canadian Copyright Act, under-licensing can result in fines of up to $20,000 for each software title illegally copied. According to research undertaken by IDC, as much as 33 percent of all software installed on PCs in Canada is not correctly licensed.
